An opinion is a belief that may or may not be backed up with evidence, but which cannot be proved with that evidence. It is normally a subjective statement and may be the result of an emotion or an interpretation of facts; people may draw opposing opinions from the same facts.

In economics, philosophy, and other social sciences, analysis based on opinion is referred to as normative analysis (what ought to be), as opposed to positive analysis, which is based on scientific observation (what materially is or is experimentally demonstrable).

Historically, the distinction of demonstrated knowledge and opinion was articulated by Ancient Greek philosophers. Plato's analogy of the divided line is a well-known illustration of the distinction between knowledge and opinion. Opinions can be persuasive, but only the facts they are based on can be said to be true or false.

'Scientific opinions' are opinions formed via the scientific method, and so are necessarily evidence backed. A scientific opinion, representing the formally-agreed consensus of a scientific body or establishment, often takes the form of a published position paper citing the research upon which the opinion is based. 'The Scientific Opinion' is somewhat equivalent to 'the public opinion' and means the complex collection of the opinions of many different scientific organizations and entities, and also the opinions of scientists undertaking scientific research in the relevant field.

What is your opinion between these two digital cameras?
Q. I am looking to buy a GOOD digital camera. I have been researching and have narrowed it down to two choices. The Canon Powershot S3 IS, and the Sony Cyber-shot H5. If you have one of these cameras please give me your opinion on it, the pros and cons. I have read mixed reviews on both cameras.

A. The best thing to do is try them both out, if possible. See which one is easier to use, in your opinion, and which one is easier to take full advantage of it's features. Also, determine what your main wants are, and make sure the camera you choose can do them...for example, "burst mode" pictures, and optical zoom.

What is your opinion of girls wearing their boots outside their pants?
Q. In my opinion, it looks just plain stupid. What do you think of this trend? Girls who do it, why do you do it? Do you wear them like that because celebrities do or do you actually think it looks good? I'm a judgmental skank because i want to know what makes people do something? If I was judgmental I would say "Girls who do that are stupid and have no mind of their own" And I'm hardly a skank. Thanks for not answering the question I haven't give anyone thumbs, up or down. Do you know the definition of a skank? Or are you just so used to being called one yourself that it's the only insult you know? If i was on here soliciting for sex I would be a skank, but I'm not. I said it looked stupid, i didn't say the girls were stupid now did… [cont.]

How do I go about getting a second opinion for a medical procedure?
Q. My doc says I need a risky heart high tech heart procedure and I feel like I should get a second opinion but don't actually know how to go about it. Do I tell the doc it is a second opinion? Do I need to have all the tests done again or will the doc use the results of the tests already done? How do I find out if my insurance will pay for it?
Asked by kkinkajoo - Sat Sep 2 23:12:34 2006 - - 7 Answers - 0 Comments

A. Call your insurance company first. Ask them the same questions. Lots of insurance companies REQUIRE second opinions. If your doctor doesn't give you your records and welcome a second opinion, I would not trust him with the surgery. This is your body and you need to make an informed decision. As far as the tests are concerned...if they are interpeted tests where it is a doctor opinion as to the results...they might want to repeat it. If it is blood work or something that is decided by lab, computer or number then I would assume the second opinion doctor would use the old results in his/her opinion.

  • If all mankind minus one were of one opinion, and only one person were of the contrary opinion, mankind would be no more justified in silencing that one person, than he, if he had the power, would be justified in silencing mankind.
  • The peculiar evil of silencing the expression of an opinion is, that it is robbing the human race; posterity as well as the existing generation; those who dissent from the opinion, still more than those who hold it. If the opinion is right, they are deprived of the opportunity of exchanging error for truth: if wrong, they lose, what is almost as great a benefit, the clearer perception and livelier impression of truth, produced by its collision with error.
  • To refuse a hearing to an opinion, because they are sure that it is false, is to assume that their certainty is the same thing as absolute certainty. All silencing of discussion is an assumption of infallibility. Its condemnation may be allowed to rest on this common argument, not the worse for being common.
  • I agree with no man's opinion. I have some of my own.
