Philosophy is the study of general and fundamental problems concerning matters such as existence, knowledge, values, reason, mind, and language. It is distinguished from other ways of addressing fundamental questions (such as mysticism, myth, or the arts) by its critical, generally systematic approach and its reliance on rational argument. The word "philosophy" comes from the Greek φιλοσοφία (philosophia), which literally means "love of wisdom".

What are your suggestions in understanding fully the subject Philosophy?
Q. I'm taking up Philosophy subject and until now, I cannot understand fully the whole point of studying Philosophy. Please help me how to appreciate my philosophy.

A. "We are all born as philosophers, we only cease to be one when we think we are right, but I'm probably wrong." I'm into philosophy as a hobby, and to me it could be the act of opening your mind to limitless possibilities, like asking questions without the need for answers. To the pessimist, this could be seen as asking questions that don't need to be asked. To the optimist, it may be viewed as the ultimate way of finding out what the human mind has to offer, without the need to actually identify its boundaries. I think you have the makings to be a great philosopher, you are asking how to fully understand a subject that will probably never be fully understood, there could always be a new page to write. This all seems ironic that I'm telling… [cont.]

What is a good essay topic to write about in philosophy?
Q. I am kind of stumped of what I would like to write about. Im interested in more of the Greek mythology subjects of philosophy. The topic is supposed to be about the enduring problems of philosophy but he said he is fine with any topic related to philosophy. Any idea's would be much appreciated. Thank you! Can you elaborate about the riddle and truth?

A. You should talk about the Philosophy of the riddle/of truth... Consider Plato's allegory of the cave and what it is to be a perceived form and a real form - consider this in determining the answer to a riddle... Incorporate Oedipus and the riddle of the Sphinx. This could be a very interesting and impressive Philosophical essay.

Quotes regarding Philosophy and philosophers:

  • The philosophers have only interpreted the world, in various ways. The point, however, is to change it.
  • Philosophy is not the owl of Minerva that takes flight after history has been realized in order to celebrate its happy ending; rather, philosophy is subjective proposition, desire, and praxis that are applied to the event.
  • What characterizes philosophy is this "step back" from actuality into possibility—the attitude best rendered by Adorno's and Horkheimer's motto quoted by Fredric Jameson: "Not Italy itself is given here, but the proof that it exists."
  • "In order to live, man must act; in order to act, he must make choices; in order to make choices, he must define a code of values; in order to define a code of values, he must know what he is and where he is – i.e. he must know his own nature (including his means of knowledge) and the nature of the universe in which he acts – i.e. he needs metaphysics, epistemology, ethics, which means: philosophy. He cannot escape from this need; his only alternative is whether the philosophy guiding him is to be chosen by his mind or by chance."
    • Ayn Rand, "Philosophy, who needs it?".
