Plato (pronounced /ˈpleɪtoʊ/, Greek: Πλάτων, Plátōn, "broad"; 428/427 BC – 348/347 BC), was a Classical Greek philosopher, mathematician, writer of philosophical dialogues, and founder of the Academy in Athens, the first institution of higher learning in the Western world. Along with his mentor, Socrates, and his student, Aristotle, Plato helped to lay the foundations of Western philosophy and science. Plato was originally a student of Socrates, and was as much influenced by his thinking as by his apparently unjust execution. Plato's sophistication as a writer is evident in his Socratic dialogues; thirty-six dialogues and thirteen letters have been ascribed to him. Plato's writings have been published in several fashions; this has led to several conventions regarding the naming and referencing of Plato's texts. Plato's dialogues have been used to teach a range of subjects, including philosophy, logic, rhetoric and mathematics. BiographyFrom Wikipedia under the

"Best" is a matter of opinion and different people will have different criteria some might think the translation closest in meaning to the original best others might think the one most easily read was personally i would go for one that you are comfortable reading - one that is simple enough that it doesn't give you headaches trying to understand it but not one written for someone half your age. browse through a few and pick the one that you think suits you best Answered by im back - Fri Feb 13 03:44:30 2009 How would the world today be different if Plato had never been born?
Q. What accomplishments made by Plato the philosopher impacted the world, and how would the world be different for us now if he had never made those accomplishments? Asked by Sarah - Mon Mar 22 21:13:45 2010 - - 4 Answers - 0 Comments A. Plato formulated most of the primary questions that are still relevant to our comprehension of philosophy, but it was Aristotle who formulated most of the answers to our satisfaction. Western civilizations could not survive by Plato's ideas; but we thrive on the ideas of Aristotle. But there is no way of knowing whether Aristotle could have achieved his accomplishments without Plato as his teacher. There are more ways than one to get to Carnegie Hall. Yet it is almost a sure bet Plato could not have achieved what he did without having Socrates as his teacher. The major portions of his writing are stories of what Socrates said, and the conversations he had with other thinkers.
