Belief, knowledge and epistemologyThe terms belief and knowledge are used differently in philosophy. Epistemology is the philosophical study of knowledge and belief. The primary problem in epistemology is to understand exactly what is needed in order for us to have knowledge. In a notion derived from Plato's dialogue Theaetetus, philosophy has traditionally defined knowledge as "justified true belief". The relationship between belief and knowledge is that a belief is knowledge if the belief is true, and if the believer has a justification (reasonable and necessarily plausible assertions/evidence/guidance) for believing it is true. A false belief is not considered to be knowledge, even if it is sincere. A sincere believer in the flat earth theory does not know that the Earth is spherical. Similarly, a truth that nobody believes is not knowledge, because in order to be knowledge, there must be some person who knows it. Later epistemologists, for instance Gettier (1963) and Goldman (1967), have questioned the "justified true belief" definition. From Wikipedia under the

From my perspective, I think it can be asked equally of Christians, too: is their faith a strength that helps them to do good in the world (give charity, give succor to the needy, act honestly in their dealings, etc.), or is it a weakness that keeps them from doing good (condemning others, compromising this world in favor of the next, denying scientific advances that could help humankind if fully explored, imposing problematic mores on the population generally, justifying war)? It's genuinely hard to say. Of course, for people who are religious, there is also the added and important layer of belief, which complicates this further. Q. There are many religions that believe in many assortment of things, but what makes one religion more right than another. For example: Christianity, Judaism, Islam, Buddhism, atheism, etc... I would just like a reason as of why you believe in your belief rather than in another and/or why shouldn't I believe in something else. Asked by fluffyness12 - Sun May 3 16:44:28 2009 - - 7 Answers - 0 Comments A. I don't think any religion is more right than another. They're all right, but when wars are fought over them, that's when religion isn't so great and dirties it's name. However, I chose to follow Wicca as I am a peaceful person and a lot of what I believe is also in Wicca (such as two divine figures, karma, etc). Good Question, star for you!
