What is your opinion regarding the chickenpox vaccine for children here in the UK?
Q. If I understand correctly the chickenpox vaccine is not available here routinely in the UK. Part of the reason given by the NHS is that exposure to chickenpox can bolster shingles immunity for adults. 1. Is this a good policy in the eyes of medical experts? Are there any Doctors, Nurses, Health Professionals who can give their opinion - I would be very interested? Do you think it should be offered routinely as part of the child's regular immunisations? 2. Can I still request the vaccine for my child at my GP?

A. Hi there, that's right. The chicken pox vaccine is not given as a part of routine childhood vaccinations in the UK as it is in the USA- this is something that may change in the near future, I have heard they want to add it to the MMR. Although the vaccine isn't given routinely, it is still available in the UK- contrary to popular belief. There are two vaccines- Varivax and Varilrix. I don't really see the need for the chicken pox vaccination to be honest. Although chicken pox is symptomatically horrid, there is very minimal risk to health in children. The other childhood vaccinations are justifiable because the illness it protects from can be a big risk to health. You may be able to request the vaccination for your child, some GPs may… [cont.]
