An opinion is a subjective statement or thought about an issue or topic, and is the result of emotion or interpretation of facts. An opinion may be supported by an argument, although people may draw opposing opinions from the same set of facts. Opinions rarely change without new arguments being presented. However, it can be reasoned that one opinion is better supported by the facts than another by analysing the supporting arguments.

An opinion may be the result of a person's perspective, understanding, particular feelings, beliefs, and desires. In casual use, the term opinion may refer to unsubstantiated information, in contrast to knowledge and fact-based beliefs.

In your opinion what peoples since the fall of the Roman Empire is the most villainous?
Q. Since the fall of Rome, many peoples have appeared on the world stage, infamous for their villainy. Who among them, in your opinion, is the worst? I personally vote for the Spanish Conquistadors. Brice - I stated infamous. Many peoples had cultural practices that we now consider highly objectional. It all springs from their disregard of other cultures. Ted K - I'm long past homework. So I guess you meant as a general statement. Runs-on-coffee - You are doing what the purpose of the question is. Thinking of various peoples and the reason for their villainy. Their are many. Is it a commentary on man?

A. The English committed no more atrocities than the Scottish Picts did to the Britons before. They are in no way comparable to the Nazis. Though Edward I was a jerk. And the Boston Massacre was no worse than the treatment of the tribal groups the US dealt with either. Talk about hypocritical. Why do you limit the question with the fall of Rome. So many of the good, fun answers are from Rome. Otherwise, it would be Hitler, Himmler, Stalin, Pol Pot, Idi Amin, Ivan IV, Temujin, Innocent III, Vlad Dracula, and Elizabeth Bathory. Some people might put Saddam Hussein in the list too.

  • Fact is not enough, opinion is too much.
    • Todor Simeonov, 2008 (2009)
  • If all mankind minus one were of one opinion, and only one person were of the contrary opinion, mankind would be no more justified in silencing that one person, than he, if he had the power, would be justified in silencing mankind.
  • The peculiar evil of silencing the expression of an opinion is, that it is robbing the human race; posterity as well as the existing generation; those who dissent from the opinion, still more than those who hold it. If the opinion is right, they are deprived of the opportunity of exchanging error for truth: if wrong, they lose, what is almost as great a benefit, the clearer perception and livelier impression of truth, produced by its collision with error.
  • To refuse a hearing to an opinion, because they are sure that it is false, is to assume that their certainty is the same thing as absolute certainty. All silencing of discussion is an assumption of infallibility. Its condemnation may be allowed to rest on this common argument, not the worse for being common.
