Q. this is an imaginary scenario... the state legislature is proposing that college tuition be free for all students who graduate high school with a B average. this tuition would be funded by state taxes and would be free for state-run colleges only (U of I, NIU, SIU, etc). For college students to continue receiving the tuition, they must maintain the B average. i need your opinion...do you think this is a good idea? yes or no? why?

What is the difference between political opinion and racially charged opinions?
Q. McCain or Obama -- it doesn't matter anymore. What do you think of some of the racially charged opinions being expressed on yahoo answers, specifically those expressed by "Ozzy fan" who hides the information in his profile, but doesn't hold back expressing his hateful thoughts and ideas? Where do you draw the line between racism and opinion?

A. it makes the yahoo answers experience very frustrating. i have to make disclaimers after every question, asking people not to be condescending, to please don't say this..., please don't say that..., etc. Loaded questions seem to always get the most responses as well.

A. I would consult your owner's manual on that one, but I would imagine just regular-grade gasoline at 87 octane would be all you need. According to quiktrip.com, which is a mid-west Oklahoma based gas company, higher octane gasoline is not BETTER gasoline, it is just more expensive to make, so the price is higher. Higher octane gasoline, like 92 or 93, is designed for more complicated engines, such as the kind of engines in a sports car, for example. I don't think your minivan would require this, unless you keep hearing a pinging noise comming from your engine, in which case you might want to consider buying higher octane gas. About V-Shell 91, this stuff is slightly different than other gas station premiums because instead of meeting… [cont.]

What is your opinion on us not dissallowing the remaining petroleum to be used up as fuel?
Q. Please give me your full opinion on this ??? It is quite likely that your grandchildren will be angry that in 2008 we didn't disallow use of the remaining petroleum as a fuel and lock it away for making petrochemicals, from plastics to pharmaceuticals, for which there is no other feedstock. Do you agree?

A. I agree that reserving petroleum its more unique uses is a good idea, but I disagree with the fact that there is no other feedstock for common industrial chemicals. Nearly all current processes use petroleum feedstocks because they are currently the cheapest feedstocks. Because it is easy and energetically favorable to oxidize hydrocarbons, it is often easiest to start with a hydrocarbon even when making a more oxidized organic chemical, such as acetone. But this doesn't mean that you can't start with a more oxidized feedstock, like cellulose from a plant. It will just take more energy to produce the finished product from inferior feedstocks, but if the price of oil goes up enough, and we have an alternative source of energy, it will… [cont.]

What is your opinion of the policy of degregulation and no oversight of corporate entities over the last 8 yrs?
Q. The prevailing attitude since about 1980 has been to write corporate America (the same people who gave us Enron, AIG, Bernie Madoff) a blank check and let everyone do as they please with as little public scrutiny as possible. What's everyone's opinion on this?
Asked by the phantom - Fri Mar 27 00:22:23 2009 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments
A. This debacle has been brewing for better than fifteen to twenty years under several administrations. No one has ever had the power to defeat the financial lobbyist. The results today has been brought to a head after unskilled stock traders have taken advantage of out of control speculation. The mortgage problems date back to acts and actions taken by the Clinton administration that took time to develop, then were exaggerated by the present wars. This is not one administrations problem. And by the looks of it, we will be paying for it after five generations.

What is your opinion on having a child outside of marriage?
Q. Do you look down on those who aren't married but have children? To what degree do you feel marriage is necessary to have a child? Does your opinion change if the parents have only been dating a short while? Or if they don't even live together?

A. I think the main thing a child needs is a loving, supportive family. That family can be made up of married parents, unmarried parents, a single parent or a gay couple. As long as love is there, the child will have a good start in life. I think it's best if a child knows both his/her parents and sees them on a regular basis, and if the parents are happy together as well. Children do benefit from having both a mother and a father around, although not necessarily married. But sometimes it just doesn't work out that way, and I think raising a child successfully is much more about the quality of the parenting than the family structure. Parents who have only dated for a short while can still raise a stable and healthy child. My boyfriend and… [cont.]

What's your opinion of people who highbeam other drivers to warn them of speed traps?
Q. I am one of those people who high beam others to warn them of a speed trap. Typically the traps are at the bottom of a hill, or where the speed limit changes from 60 to 50. I understand that these fines go to the city, but it's still to me an underhanded way to catch speeders. But sometimes those I high beam still don't get it, and get caught in the trap anyways. So what's your opinion? Especially police officers. Now, I have alot of respect for officers, in fact I work with police officers. But high beam warnings was taught to me by my driving instructor, my dad, basically anyone who had any hand in my learning to drive.

A. I appreciate it. And I learned the hard way years ago when I had just gotten my license. I was with my mom and neither of us knew what the high beams meant. I fell into a notorious speed trap and got my first ticket at age fifteen. We were looking all over the car to see if they were warning us about something wrong...no my lights weren't on, etc. I laugh about it now. I don't warn people now because I also work with cops as part of the media and people are insane, dangerous drivers now. The more of those idiots caught, the better. Though I still appreciate the heads up for myself.

A. people can have gallstones or cancer of the gallbladder and not have any symptoms. although cancer can cause jaundice. removal of the gallbladder even if you have gallstones isn't always needed. only when they dislodge from the gallbladder and block the duct or problems such as intense pain, nausea or vomiting, indigestion and sometimes infection. women are 2 to 3 times more likely to get gallstones and 20% of women never even know they have them. women who are overwieght, have had children, and take oral contraceptives are at greater risk. My Doctor said women who are fair, fat. and 40!!! I had gallstones and when I ate certain foods high in fat I sometimes had an attack. The pain was unbearable and it would last anywhere from 10 min… [cont.]

Q. I have a family history of gallbladder disease. My great-grandmother passed away last year from gallbladder cancer. I've had pains in that area for the last few weeks. I've had an ultrasound, ct scan and a hida scan. I'm going for a 2nd opinion on Tuesday with a surgeron. Could he suggest surgery even though my tests are coming out negative?

What is your personal opinion on the H1N1 pandemic and vaccines?
Q. Let me know if you think the country is overreacting, not doing enough, or whatever you think. Will you get the vaccine, would you let your children get the vaccine? All opinion, but I'd love to hear what you all think.

A. "In My Arrogant Opinion," the 2009 H1N1Flu pandemic is no more dangerous than the 1957 and 1968 Flu pandemics. These caused an unusual degree of absenteeism from work and school, but not unusual mortality. And it appears to be MUCH less dangerous than the 1918 Flu pandemic, the worst in history. I usually do take the seasonal Flu vaccine, but I have not decided whether to take the vaccine for the 2009 H1N1. It takes extra time and work to develop a vaccine for an entirely new strain of Flu. I am concerned that this vaccine may be rushed through, like the vaccine for the 1976 Flu, and may not be as safe as the seasonal flu vaccines. I may wait 2 or 3 months to see whether people get adverse reactions to the vaccine, before I decide.
