Second Opinion?
Q. I got my economics test back and it was not so great. I didn't do as well on the short answer questions. Anyways. my instructor said we could redo the essay questions. I think I know what I got mixed up but I want a second opinion before I turn in my answers. 1. Imagine a market for Penn Deepsea fishing reels in equilibrium. Draw this on a graph and demonstrate what would happen if the govt. instituted a tax on these reels. Show the effects the tax would have on the quantity and price of reels sold.-I think I got it mixed up and insted I drew a shift in the demand part of the graph going to the left. I think I should have just shifted the supply line up/left so that the demand would be decreased and the price increased. 2. The tax on the… [cont.]

A. You were on the right track. Don't shift either the supply or the demand curve. Instead, realize that the tax raises the price faced by the consumer, but lowers the price that flows to the producer. The easiest way to find the new equilbrium is to look at the place where the S and D curves intersect. Now, lower the quantity (move your eyes to the left) until the distance between the S and D curves is exactly equal to the amount of the tax. This will tell you what quantity will clear the market with the tax -- Call this Q. Now, read off the price where Q intersects the D curve. This will be the after-tax price that consumers must pay. Finally, read off the price where Q intersects the S curve. This will be the pre-tax price that… [cont.]

How do I go about getting a second opinion for a medical procedure?
Q. My doc says I need a risky heart high tech heart procedure and I feel like I should get a second opinion but don't actually know how to go about it. Do I tell the doc it is a second opinion? Do I need to have all the tests done again or will the doc use the results of the tests already done? How do I find out if my insurance will pay for it?
Asked by kkinkajoo - Sat Sep 2 23:12:34 2006 - - 7 Answers - 0 Comments

A. Call your insurance company first. Ask them the same questions. Lots of insurance companies REQUIRE second opinions. If your doctor doesn't give you your records and welcome a second opinion, I would not trust him with the surgery. This is your body and you need to make an informed decision. As far as the tests are concerned...if they are interpeted tests where it is a doctor opinion as to the results...they might want to repeat it. If it is blood work or something that is decided by lab, computer or number then I would assume the second opinion doctor would use the old results in his/her opinion.

How can I get a professional second opinion on my eye bag removal surgery?
Q. I had my eyebags removed just over a year ago. I dont feel that the surgeon did a very good job. One of the cuts at the side of the eye (my surgeon didnt just cut under the eye, he went out about a centimetre at each side) looked lumpy from day one, and after a year I had the scar revised. Its still not that good, though, and I dont think the surgeon took enough excess skin away from under the eye. I have asked him, but he says he has. My dilemma is that I am thinking "of course he would say that!" and I would like a proper medical second opinion as to whether the best job possible has been done. I imagine that cosmetic surgeons all stick together though, so not sure what to do. Any tips? I live in the sout-east, can get to London,… [cont.]

A. Sorry to hear that, unfortunately, there are many incompetent plastic surgeons out there. Go ahead and get a 2nd opinion from a trusted and known plastic surgeon and tell him the "damage" done and what can be done to rectify the problem. The only unfortunate thing is that you will have to pay him again, thus, costing you more in the long run. choose wisely. There are many options now to tighten/renew the skin via laser therapies that are less-invasive...speak with a true professional. Good luck!

I need a second opinion on sauces for tonight's Valentine's Day dinner?
Q. I am preparing a very nice meal for us tonight for dinner. I am preparing 2 very nice filet migons with a nice merlot mushroom sauce. Second, I was going to prepara roasted aspargus and potato gratin and a raspberry white chocolate cake for dessert. My question, should I serve a hollandaise sauce with the aspargus or is 2 sauces too much? I am thinking it is, but I would like a second opinion. Thanks!

A. On any other nite, it might be too much, but for Valentine's I think it sounds wonderful! Either way you are fine. I think the creamy richness of the hollandaise would be a great combo with the smoky fruitiness of the other sauce. My mouth is watering as I type this, you sound like a great cook!

Is this normal charge for getting a second opinion from a pediatrician?
Q. My daughter's normal pediatrician recommended getting her fitted for a helmet because of a flat spot on her head. Before jumping into this, I decided to get a second opinion from another pediatrician in my area. For this second opinion, which took maybe 10 minutes at the most, she charged $115. Does this sound unreasonable to you? My daughter's regular pediatrician only charges $44 for an office visit. I also noticed that underneath the services listed on my insurance info, the second opinion was listed as "new patient 30 minute". First of all my daughter is not a patient, second of all it didn't last even near 30 minutes just for her to give me her opinion. What do you think about the price?
Asked by punkinbutt'smama - Fri Jul 20 22:48:37 2007 - - 4 Answers - 0 Comments

A. I think it sounds like a lot, for a pediatrician. Is she some kind of specialist also? I went to a neurologist a few months ago for migraines I've been having, and it cost $330, and it was a quick, unhelpful visit, so I know how you feel as far as getting overcharged. If you feel you're being overcharged, then I'd definitely contest the charge with the billing department of her office, and mention that the visit did not take that long. I think it would definitely make a difference in the total charge. I don't know that I'd worry about the "new patient" part, because to me that could just mean she hadn't seen your daughter before, not neccesarily that he's adding her to her patients. Good luck to you & your daughter~ *I should add-… [cont.]

How do I get a message to many people at one time about getting a second opinion or getting ripped off?
Q. I just had my 2004 Subaru checked out for a noise I heard. One dealership said my transmission was shot and had to be rebuilt as a cost of $3,600.00. I had it put on a flatbed and got a second opinion from another Subaru dealership. They called me the next day and said it was my axel. They fixed it without charge and Subaru of America paid my flatbed fee. I think the first dealership was looking to go on vacation at my expense.

A. If it was a Subaru dealer that gave you this false diagnosis I would issue a complaint about the dealer to head office.

Q. My PCP has been rather worthless and the staff is just rude. I saw a different doctor while mine was out of town, just to get meds refilled...I would like to get a second opinion from this doctor. Do I need to have all of my medical records sent to the other doctor to do that? What steps need to be taken. My insurance is a PPO, so I don't need to worry about referrals and such.

My veterinarian, after I talked to her, said that before I bring the puppy in to try some Benadryl Cream. Is it safe? If they ingest some, will it hurt them. Second opinion on whether I should use it or not. Thanks!

Should I get a second opinion regarding my taking coumadin?
Q. I have a history of heart problems..I had mitral valve stenoses which was repaired and then had a few different operations for non related problems since.I had no problems.I am a middle age woman now and have been on coumadin as a precaution for the past ten years.I had one operation while on this blood thinner and this was the last and only operation after which I had complications with and end up in intesive care on a transfusion and then another op to drain a pool of blood in my abdomen.I'd feel safer without the stuff.Should I get a second opinion?
Asked by carolhubac - Thu Mar 8 18:18:18 2007 - - 7 Answers - 0 Comments

A. It sounds to me like your treatment with coumadin is appropriate, given your history of mitral stenosis with "repair." However, without knowing details of your medical history, I cannot comment with certainty and would advise that you talk it over with another physician. That said, usually mitral stenosis is not "repaired," but the valve is replaced with a prosthetic valve and coumadin is usually required in this situation. And patients with mitral stenosis also tend to have atrial fibrillation, in which case coumadin is also required. If either of these statements apply to you, you require the drug to prevent valve thrombosis and stroke.

Is it bad to take pills with orange juice? My friend says yes but I wanted a second opinion?
Q. I just told my friend that I take my medication with orange juice and he is telling me that is bad. I wanted a second opinion. On the pill bottle it says no alcohol, but says nothing about OJ. He is saying that it is bad to take pills with any citric juices.
Asked by :) - Thu Dec 11 23:11:18 2008 - - 5 Answers - 0 Comments

A. I never heard that one before but If your medication is time released then the citric acid in citrus juice will erode the thin time release coating on the pill or tablet. Don't think it would be an extreme danger to your health but it may cause your medication to be digested faster and causing the desired effect of the medication to wear off faster. If it's a pain pill it may cause the pain reduction to wear out faster and you may have to take the medication faster (if the doctor say you can)

Exactly when would you consider a second opinion?
Q. I have been bleeding now for months. My doctor put me on orthotrycycline. One month has passed already. I am still bleeding. My doctor says it may take a couple of "cycles" until it stops. Is this normal or should I get a second opinion?
Asked by brittany l - Sat Jun 2 20:03:43 2007 - - 7 Answers - 0 Comments

A. There's a highly effective birth control pill that can actually help clear up your skin too, ortho tri-CYCLEN. It provides you with a low daily dose of hormones that prevent pregnancy, is this the same drug that you are talking about? if you don't feel comfortable of waiting another few months, you can always see another doctor this is a hormone drug, so it does take time for your brain to get adjusted.

Should i get a second opinion from a high-risk pregnancy doctor?
Q. I am 24 weeks pregnant and my doctor is telling me that my baby is going to die and he is giving me no hope. Should i get a second opinion from a perinatologist so that maybe they will give me a little hope? I am not giving up on my daughter...
Asked by starsnlove - Thu Jun 11 03:34:37 2009 - - 4 Answers - 0 Comments

A. Absolutely. I have been through the high risk thing, and the OB painted a very dismal picture, I was soo nervous but went to the perinatologist who was very blase, yeah we see this all the time, its really not that big a deal, and I was absolutely subdued. Hold your panic in till you see a specialist, they know what is going on. And I do think they will give you more than a little hope.

A. First, what does your mother want to do? Does she want to fight this disease? If she does than go ahead with a second opinon. Usually the oncologist will cooperate. You need to ask for copies of all her medical records, including recent CT/PET scan from both the hospital and her oncologist. Explain that you want a second opinion. Usually this information can be placed on a CD and sent to another doctor for a review (so your Mom won't need to even go . Should I go to another dentist for second opinion and does temporary fill-in need to come out?

A. Girl you go wherever you want to go. That first go around sounds a bit spooky to me! If you had a filling done and the area felt painful, it must have been a "high spot" because the occlussion was not adjusted (means the filling was not level with the rest of your teeth, that would cause pain when biting). Just because your dentist could not get it right the first or even second time, does not mean you need a root canal !? Did they take an xray and determine there was an internal infection? You didn't mention that. I would go for a second opinion, for sure!
