how the subjective nature of language influences meaning and perception. Do you think your use of language is?
Q. how the subjective nature of language influences meaning and perception. Do you think your use of language is clearly understood? Why or why not? How might improving your language use benefit your interpersonal communication?

A. Language is the primary conduit that we use to express our perceptions and emotions to others. Subtle body language and direct facial expressions tend to get our point across, but language is the best propagator of thoughts.

How can anyone say range factor is "subjective?"?
Q. I won't call him out by name, but some Yankees fan was explaining that Jeter's poor range factor is due to injuries or this or that and that it is subjective. Let's see--you watch a couple of highlight films and decide if a player has good range or not. Or you look at number which compare him to others at his position. Sure, the ratio of groundballs and such will vary, but it means it's not a perfect fielding stat. But subjective? How uninformed are some people here, anyway. (Not YOU, of course!)

A. Range factor is not subjective, it is objective. You can watch just a few games and come the the objective conclusion that Jose Reyes has more range, and can get to more ground balls than Jeter. Those players with greater range will likely make more errors simply because they will reach more balls. I am a Jeter fan and I think he is a smart and great player but his defensive skills are not close to Omar Vizquel, Reyes and others in MLB. I will make one more statement that will get me some down thumbs but I believe A-Rod was a better defensive shortstop than Jeter when they were both playing shortstop.

Is there an objective reality, or is everything only able to be viewed by a subjective lens?
Q. I'm starting to think there is always a point of view, so even if something is objective we can never see it that way. What do you think? Example: people say a good knife is one that cuts well. But a bread knife won't cut meat as well as a steak knife. Isn't even seeing it as a steak knife subjective? Is function always observer relative? If there is an objective reality, how can we ever see it?
Asked by Futility Knife - Wed Dec 12 13:20:34 2007 - - 8 Answers - 0 Comments

A. No one can be absolutely sure what is perceived is an objective reality. Because perception itself is subjective. In its absolute sense, objectivity is unachievable; it's beyond the scope of our perception. But this should not reduce us to agnostics. We still can view realities through our subjective lens. And that helps us become successful creatures of the planet.
